My First 26.2 – Disney vs. Space Coast?

I’ve been toying with the idea of running a marathon since right around Mile 11 of the Princess Half Marathon.  I was so close to the end of the race and felt great, so I started thinking that maybe running 26.2 miles wasn’t as impossible as it seemed just a few short months ago.  Running a marathon is never something I wanted to do.  I’ve had a few friends who have done it, and while I had a heck of a lot of respect for them, I just never had the desire to do it myself.

2013 St. Patty’s Day 10K at Evergreen Cemetery

Today ran the St. Patty’s Day 10K at Evergreen Cemetery.  Yep, I said “we”.  The running bug bit my husband too and after watching his best friend cross the finish line at the Disney Marathon in January, Adam decided that he wanted to run a half marathon too.  He started training a few months back and had a 6-mile training run scheduled for this weekend.  I wanted to run this race and since it fit well into his training and my racing schedule, we signed up.

2013 Gate River Run 15K

One of the things I love about living in Florida is being surrounded by water.  It’s so peaceful and relaxing – I love being out on a boat in the middle of the river, floating on a raft in the pool, or even just staring out my office window at the beautiful (but not so clean) St. John’s River when I’m stressed out at work.

2013 Disney Princess Half Marathon

I kind of don’t know where to start with my recap of the Disney Princess Half Marathon, so forgive me if my thoughts are scattered all over the place.  I was really worried about the early race time, I thought there was no way I’d be able to get to sleep early enough to feel well-rested for the race.  I didn’t get to bed quite as early as I’d like, but I think I was finally out by 9:30PM and surprisingly slept until my first alarm went off.. and then the snooze.  Have I mentioned that I’m not a morning person?

Disney’s Fit for a Princess Expo

Once the meet-up was over, I was eager to make my way over to the expo (after a quick pit-stop to go Soarin’ with my new friend Christina).  This is the first race I’ve done where there is an expo, so to say I was excited would be an understatement.  I went to the expo marathon weekend but it was hard to take my time wandering around since I had Braden with me.  This time, I planned to shop.. oh, and I did.  Adam took the day off to come down and hang out with me at the expo, he’s recently started running too and was excited to sign up for the Wine & Dine half and check out all of the fun running gear.  Before he arrived, I picked up my bib and made my way over to the runners relations booth to change corrals.  I figured my time from my 10K in January would bump me up from E to B.. I was shocked when she slapped this sticker on my bib!

Disney Princess Half Marathon Meet-Up

Never heard of a runDisney meet-up? You’re not alone, neither had I until I signed up for the race and started connecting with other runners on twitter and facebook.  Once I heard about them, I was determined to get in.  When else would I get the opportunity to run alongside Jeff Galloway?!   In order to attend the meet-up, you have to be one of the first to RSVP once the event is announced on the Disney Parks Blog.  In the past, they have filled up in just 2 to 3 minutes.  It’s crazy, so crazy that the Disney Parks blog actually crashed a few times on the Friday before the event, when the meet-up details are usually posted.

2013 Florida Striders Resolution Run 10K

If you follow me on twitter or we are friends on facebook, you’re well aware that the running bug bit me last fall. I got it in my head that I could finish a half-marathon and started running. Then my knees decided they hated me (or the non-running shoes I was running in!) so I was sidelined for a few weeks while I let them heal. Once I could walk again without any pain, I paid a quick visit to Jacksonville Running Company and got fitted for a pair of running shoes (Asics GT-2170). Running in them is seriously like walking on a cloud, heaven! So with my lovely new shoes, I started training for the runDisney Princess Half Marathon.
