As of two weeks ago, I officially started my Disney Marathon training plan. I thinking I mentioned before, it’s basically Hal Higdon’s Novice 1 plan, but reworked just a bit to accommodate my fall race schedule. I may add a few other races to my plan depending on our weekend plans, just because I’d much rather do my long runs in a race environment than on my own. While I do enjoy doing shorter runs on my own, the 2+ hour runs get awfully lonely!
Anyway, here’s how I did. The top line was my planned milage and under it is what I actually did. I mentioned last week, I’m trying not to focus on paces this time around since I’m not starting with a decent base. I’m just trying to get the miles in. Running 4:1 intervals worked really well for me when I ran with my friends running group last year, I was able to do my long runs and not be utterly useless for the rest of the day, so I’ve been sticking with that. So far, so good!
Week 1
Week one was rough, I won’t lie. I got my toosh handed to me after basically taking off since.. ohh.. March? Lesson learned! Jumping back in with intervals is helping and hopefully I’ll start fully running my week day runs and only using the intervals for my long runs soon.

Week 2
This week was much better than last. I was super intimidated about the long run since I have been struggling with the three milers, but I stuck to my 4:1’s and kept the pace super slow. Hal’s training plan called for seven this week but I was going to do six since I was at Disney last weekend and didn’t get my long run in, then do seven next week. I felt great when I hit six, so I kept going! Wahoo!

Ending last week on a high note and getting new shoes this weekend has me really excited to get out there tonight, which is good, because I haven’t looked forward to a run in a LONG time! Yay! Has anyone run in Nike Structure’s before? I was hesitant to try Nikes because I haven’t heard much about their running shoes, but my Mizuno’s were killing my knees and my ASICS aggravated my achilles tendon issues.
Great job getting started! Training for a marathon is no small feat (not that I’ve done it yet, though).

Thanks, John! I missed a few workouts (oops!) and I know I need to get my toosh in gear — I ran two marathons last year and they hurt a LOT less with proper training!
Good luck with your training!
Awesome job on getting back into training! Is this going to be your first marathon? I think Disney is the way to go for long races…all the characters and entertainment distract you from the length ofn time running!

Thanks!! It will be my third marathon, my second at Disney! I totally agree, I loved the Disney marathon SO much more than my first one. You can’t beat the on course entertainment!
Ohhh, I really like your tables showing planned vs. actual! I need to start doing that!
I can’t believe you walked 8 miles at Disney! Is that just around the parks? I never thought about how all the walking really adds up!

I got the idea from Jen at Runners Trials
We walked back and forth all over the Magic Kingdom!! Adam had his pedometer thing on and I was shocked at how much we walked.
Great job with the training!
