Cleaning Up and Moving Forward

I’ve been doing some behind the scenes updating to the blog.  Hopefully most of it is seamless and you won’t notice it.. or if you do, you’ll see that it looks and works much better!

I’ve been blogging since 2006 and in that time, I’ve moved over from Blogspot to WordPress and been through countless theme changes.  A lot of my older posts had all kinds of formatting issues because you couldn’t use CSS on Blogspot so I had to do it all in HTML.  Now that I’m doing things the right way, my older posts looked funky and it was driving me nuts.  I figured since I recently upgraded to a new, cleaner theme that it was time to clean up the older posts as well.

I also added tags to a lot of my older posts so if you’re looking for something, hopefully that will make it easier.  I’m sure there are some I missed, but hopefully I got most of them!

One thing I noticed is that I used to post a lot more and I feel like what I was posting better reflected who I am.  When I started blogging about running, there was a very distinct change in what I was posting about, how often, and what those posts looked like.  Now I’m posting a lot less and to be honest, what I’m writing doesn’t seem all that entertaining to me.  I really enjoyed going through the older posts and reading about the cute things the kids were doing and saying and remembering how we spent our weekends.

With blogging there are so many rules about how often to post and producing quality content and oh no, what will brands think if I post too much about being a mom and not enough about running?!? You know what though?  I really don’t care.   The reason I started blogging was to chronicle our lives as newlyweds and to document our family as it grew.  I’ve gotten away from that and I’m thinking maybe that is why I don’t enjoy it so much these days.  That could explain why in the last two years there are so many posts that start with “It’s been a while..” and are filled with way too many pictures, text, and excuses  I wrote the stuff and even I was just skimming over it.

So from now on, I’m blogging about what I want to.  I’m not worrying about what keywords I need in my title or if there are too many posts about my family and not enough about running.  I’m going to write about what is important to me and what I know I’ll want to look back on in a few years and read.  Isn’t that the point?

A lot of that is going to be what we’re up to and cute things the kids do, because my family is, and always will be, my number one priority.  Running is still a big part of my life and naturally, I still plan to talk about it and share my race recaps and chat about training.  Lord knows I need the support and motivation – balancing it all is hard and I love the amazing support and encouragement that I’ve received from the running community.

So that is my long-winded way of saying that I want to share more of who I really am.  I want to stop worrying about the “blogging rules” (who came up with those anyway?!) and share content that is important to me.  Hopefully you’ll stick around!

  1. This is great news! I’m sure this may feel liberating (or scary). I am only one reader, but I read your blog for your authentic view on being a mom who also runs, not about a runner who also moms (er, parents.) Thank you for sharing your perspective with us.

    1. It’s a little bit of both.. I think mostly liberating!

Thank you so much for your comment, I really appreciate it. I enjoy sharing about our day and love hearing from readers, sometimes I feel like I’m talking to myself!

      Have a wonderful day!

  2. Girl good for you! I’m so glad you posted this. I also blog for myself. I blog about us as a family, my running, my faith in Christ and just my life in general, no matter what anyone thinks. We have to be true to ourselves before anyone else!

  4. I never knew there were blogging rules, but then again I don’t have a lot of readers. I blog to document my life. I know I will never be able to remember all the cute things that happened, or how I was feeling at a certain time. This way I can document all the stuff that happens in my life.
